The San Beda College Red Lions proved once again that they are a force to be reckoned with in NCAA Season 86 by thrashing archrival Colegio de San Juan de Letran Knights, 77–60 before a sizeable crowd at the Arena in San Juan City last Wednesday, July 21.

The game was never in doubt from the get-go as the Red Lions blitz their way to a 12-3 start. They never relinquished the lead throughout the game, and held both the Knights and their tempers in relative check.

Veterans Borgie Hermida and Garvo Lanete led the charge for the Red Lions by scoring 22 and 16, respectively. The Mendiola quintet also shot a very high field goal percentage at 46 percent, while limiting their opponents to only 32 percent. Punctuating its dominance in the game, they also took command of the rebounding battle 53–31.

According to coach Frankie Lim of the Red Lions, his defensive plan was implemented perfectly, and it ultimately paved their way to victory. “They got buried by our full court press” he said. ”Superman” Sudan Daniel also proved to be a nightmare for the Knights, as he blocked six of their shots.

To add to the woes of the Knights, chief guard Kevin Alas injured his knee in the second quarter and was not able to return to the game. Point guard Franz Dysam led the scoring chores for the knights with 11 points.

There was a lot of hype surrounding this ballgame largely because of the incident that took place in the 2010 FilOil Flying V Preseason Invitational over the summer, where Letran decided to walk out and forfeit the game against the Red Lions after its head coach, Louie Alas, almost came to blows with San Beda assistant tactician Ed Cordero. A lot of fans expected a highly contested and tight affair.

In fact, San Beda’s blowout win surprised many a specator, including Lim. “I thought it was going to be close,” he said. Still, the game saw minor episodes where tempers could have flared. In the first quarter, Kevin Alas and San Beda forward Rome dela Rosa got entangled after a mad scramble for the ball. Luckily, cooler heads prevailed. Later in the half, Daniel was charged a technical foul for second motion.

It was the third setback for the Knights, who haven’t settled into their system this season.

THE Mapúa Institute of Technology Cardinals tried almost everything they could to win the ballgame. But, in the end, they still bowed down to the mighty Red Lions of San Beda College.

In what has been the most physical game so far in the early portion of the 86^th Season of the NCAA, the Red Lions came out victorious again, winning 69-64 over the Cardinals last Wednesday, July 7, 2010 at the Arena in San Juan City. It was San Beda’s third conquest in as many games.

“Tough win. Scary. Ugly win. But, it’s still a win. So, I’ll take it. But, I have to tell my boys that if I were them, they should be scared. We’ve been starting slow the past two games. It’s not good for us. Nasisira momentum namin when we start soft and then after a while bigla silang magigising. That’s not a good thing. Parang tini-turn on and off lang yung switch. And, for me as a coach, that’s scary,” said San Beda Head Coach Frankie Lim.

The Cardinals surprised the Red Lions by utilizing a running game against them. And, interestingly, for the most part of the first three quarters, Mapúa was beating San Beda at their own game. They scored 8 fastbreak points in the first quarter and were willing to get physical with the much larger Red Lions. Mapúa’s biggest margin was 9-points.

“Less than 30 seconds [After the game began], sinuntuk na si [Jake] Pascual. Right there and then, meron nang statement. And [Andretti] Stevens was playing around and trying to get into Borgie’s [Hermida] head. So I told them at halftime, ‘Linoloko lang kayo ng mga yan eh! What can they do inside the court? They don’t have guns. All they can do is guard you and get into your minds, sirain yung diskarte niyo,’” stressed Lim.

The fourth-year San Beda head coach was referring Maki Acosta as the player who threw the punch at the start of the game. But, Acosta was only charged with a flagrant foul. Acosta and Pascual were battling for position at the post area when the referee stopped the action.

Andretti Stevens was playing tight defense on Borgie Hermida all game long and limited San Beda’s current leading scorer [16.0 PPG] to only 2 first half points. Coach Frankie Lim was giving his veteran playmaker earfuls at various portions of the game.

“I just kept on telling him to make the right decisions. Do the right thing. You can’t overdo it. You can’t be the hero. It takes a team to win this game at hindi siya puwedeng mag-paka-hero. Hindi kami mamamatay sa ganun klaseng laro. I kept on telling him, I kept on going near him. I kept on telling him to make good decisions,” explained Lim.

In the fourth quarter, Hermida responded by scoring 10 points. He finished with 14 points and 6 assists. Garvo Lanete, who hit the go-ahead basket in the fourth quarter via a right wing jumper, also had 14 points. Rome dela Rosa continued to impress as well as he contributed 13. Dave Marcelo had a solid first half, already getting a double-double at that point with 12 markers and 10 rebounds. He grabbed 4 more rebounds in the second half to finish with a total 14.

Anthony Semerad injured his tailbone by falling down hard after a mid-air collision with TG Guillermo. A stretcher was brought out to the court by medics, but the Fil-Australian rookie managed to get back on his feet and walk back to the bench with the help of his teammates.

The Cardinals had a great chance to take the game back from the Red Lions in the fourth quarter after stealing the ball on one occasion, but they were unable to knock down three, three-point attempts.

Team Captain Erwin Cornejo had a brilliant performance, scoring a game-high 20 points and grabbing 7 rebounds and 3 assists. Jason Pascual contributed 13 points including 3 three-point baskets. With this defeat, the Cardinals have split their first two games on the tournament.

“You have to give credit to Mapúa! Honestly, nahirapan kami. Nahirapan kami. They played very good defense and they just fell short pagdating sa dulo. Nakuha lang namin,” stressed coach Frankie Lim after the game.

San Beda’s record is now 3-0 with their next game taking place two weeks from now on Wednesday, July 21, 2010. Their next game will be against their arch-rivals, the Colegio de San Juan de Letran Knights.

Coach Frankie Lim knows that his team cannot start off slow against the Knights.

“Dalawa lang ang depensa nun. Tough and toughest,” said Lim.

LOOK! Up in the sky! It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s ‘Superman’ Sudan Daniel!

As Michole Sorela tossed the basketball up in the air, the 6-foot-7 dunking machine snatched it with his two hands and sent it crashing right back down to earth.

That thunderous alley-oop jam gave the San Beda College Red Lions its biggest lead of the game at 46 points, 97-51 with 2:21 remaining in the fourth quarter. His team crushed the Emilio Aguinaldo College Generals, 97-55 last Friday, July 02, 2010 at the Arena in San Juan City. It was San Beda’s second straight victory in the 86^th Season of the NCAA.

However, before the Red Lions went on a rampage, the Generals appeared to have control of the game in the first quarter as they held an early 10 point lead.

“It was a slow start. Para unahan kami ng 10 points. It’s not my ideal first quarter. So, at halftime, medyo nagalit ako sa kanila because of how they started. I think we did well in the third and fourth quarter. My second group won it for us,” said San Beda head coach, Frankie Lim.

That second group was led by none other than Sudan Daniel himself, as he came up with a monster performance, scoring 18 points and grabbing 18 rebounds. He also blocked 3 shots.

“That’s Sudan for you. If he doesn’t play soft, he plays hard all the time. I think he’ll be good. Marami nang nag-iisip na Sudan is soft. Sudan is like this and that, but you know, he’s a very nice guy, a guy who follows instructions and a guy who just wants to win,” said Lim.

Fifth-year point guard, Borgie Hermida also had a solid performance as he scored 17 points and dished out 6 assists. But, his coach expects a lot more from his veteran playmaker.

“He bounced back. He had a lousy first quarter and I told him that at halftime and he came back. Maganda ang character ng bata. He responds very well,” said Lim.

Lim was then asked whether the Red Lions were sending a statement to the other teams in the league with this dominating performance.

“In a way, yes. But, I’m not worried about them. I’m worried about us. About how we start and how we finish. I think that’s the only way that we can give ourselves a chance to win,” said Lim.

San Beda now joins the San Sebastian College-Recoletos Golden Stags as the early league leaders with 2-0 win-loss cards. EAC on the other hand drops to 0-2.

The Red Lions look to continue their winning ways as they face the Mapúa Institute of Technology Cardinals in their next game on Wednesday, July 7, 2010 at the Arena in San Juan City.

“We cannot start this way, that’s for sure. My three practices on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, they have to realize that we have to start strong and we can’t fool around with Mapúa. Mapúa is capable of beating big teams and they should know that. They should be aware of that,” stated Lim.

The Perpetual Help Altas literally took a beating when they faced the San Beda Red Lions, 100-76, at the 2010 FilOil Flying V Tanduay First Five Invitational Cup last June 5, 2010 at the Arena in San Juan City.

After a 6-2 lead by the Altas in the early goings of the 1^st quarter, San Beda ignited a 17-0 run in a span of 7 minutes to take a commanding 14-point lead with less than 2 minutes in the 1^st 10 minutes of action.

Chrisper Elopre and Raffy Ynion silenced San Beda’s initial onslaught but it was not enough to stop the Red Lions from posting a 19-point margin at the end of the 1^st quarter, 29-10.

Garvo Lanete, Rome de la Rosa, and Dave Marcelo torched the Altas for a combined 16-points in the 2^nd quarter to finish the half with a 22-point lead, 51-29.

Jet Vidal tried to take matters into his own hands with a 15-point 4^th quarter performance but the effort did not prevent San Beda from turning the game into a single sided affair.

SAN BEDA College is a win away from a quarterfinal berth in the 2010 FilOil Flying V Tanduay First Five Invitational Cup by carving out a 74-66 beating of Arellano University at the Arena in San Juan City last May 26.

The Red Lions relished their crack at yet another NCAA Season 86 rival and seemed to enjoy themselves on-court after their victory by forfeiture against Colegio de San Juan de Letran last Saturday as they started out strong and maintained double-digit advantages for huge chunks of the ballgame.

San Beda erected a 19-point cushion, its biggest, on a drive by rookie Fil-American Kyle Pascual with a little over four minutes remaining in the contest.

Thirteen of the 14 members of the San Beda outfit contributed to the victory, with Garvo Lanete leading the charge with 10 points. Sudan Daniel and seldom-used point guard Melo Lim added nine markers apiece in the victory, San Beda’s fourth in five games.

Incidentally, the Mendiola five played sans rookie point guard Mar Villahermosa (broken hand) and Ginno Soliman, who has been cut and is reportedly serving his residency with University of Sto. Tomas.

Arellano never had the chance to recover despite the relentless efforts of marksman Andrian Celeda, who led the way with 25 points.

The Chiefs’ woes were compounded by an injury to 6’6 rookie center Prince Caperal. The former member of the RP Youth training pool was carried off the floor in a stretcher early in the second quarter after suffering a blow to the shoulder in a collision with Red Lions forward Jake Pascual. They had already lost guard John Tayongtong to a knee injury in a matchup with Ateneo de Manila, but expect him back for the coming NCAA campaign.

Arellano still has a chance to crack the quarterfinal round of the tournament despite the loss today. Currently at 2-4, it needs to beat De La Salle University on Friday, June 4 and has to hope that the Green Archers bow to San Beda this Saturday and Perpetual Help (2-3) drops at least one of its last two games in order to qualify as Group A’s fourth-placed team.

In related news, the management of Arellano University said experienced coach Leo Isaac will take over the coaching helm for Season 86. The move demotes Junjie Ablan, the NCAA’s youngest-ever head coach at 30 in 2009, to lead assistant tactician, and reorganizes the Legarda hierarchy to its set-up in its NCRAA heyday. Ablan will also take charge of the Arellano Baby Chiefs in NCAA juniors play.

TEMPERS flared and a Colegio de San Juan de Letran walkout gave San Beda College its third win in four games at the 2010 FilOil Flying V Tanduay First Five Invitational Cup at the Arena in San Juan City last May 22.

Letran came out firing, racing to a 19-10 lead at the end of the first quarter.

In the second quarter, Sudan Daniel ignited a rally by blocking a Raymond Almazan attempt. Jaypee Mendoza eventually tied the game at 24. At the 2:10 mark of the quarter, Franz Dysam was called for an unsportsmanlike foul on Borgie Hermida as he appeared to have put his foot under Hermida as he knocked down a three point basket to give San Beda the lead, 32-31. Hermida went on to knock in 2 technical free-throws to put San Beda up by three, 34-31.

Frustration began to set in on the minds of the Knights, and their game showed it, as it began to slip away as the Red Lions took a ten-point, 47-37 lead after back-to-back three pointers by Garvo Lanete. Letran responded with a 7-0 run, but an Anthony Semerad triple put the San Beda lead back to six, 50-44. The Knights turned the ball over on the next possession and the Red Lions were up and running.

Anthony Semerad went up for a fastbreak lay-up and was fouled by Kevin Alas who tried to draw a charge. It was the fifth and final foul of Kevin Alas and it occurred on the 6:22 mark of the third quarter.

As Alas walked to the bench, he held on to the basketball. Once he got close to his father, Letran head coach, Louie Alas, the long-time Letran coach, got the ball from his son, and threw it high in the air.

The referees slapped a warning on Alas, which apparently prompted San Beda coach Frankie Lim and assistant coach Ed Cordero to stand up and complain to the referee. In a jiffy, Alas, flanked by his players from the bench, fast approached Cordero. Cooler heads tried to pacify both squads, and in particular Alas and Cordero.

The referees ejected both Alas and Cordero from the playing court. Cordero quickly stood up and walked towards the locker room while Alas gathered his team in a huddle. After a few seconds, the entire Letran team walked out of the playing court.

After the game, the two tacticians had differing versions of the incident.

“When I complained to the referees about the warning, cause I wanted them to give me a technical foul, I saw Ed uttering the word, ‘EXPLETIVE’ to me,” Alas narrated in Filipino. “Sa akin siya nakatingin eh. Ang tanong, bakit siya nag-gaganoong salita sa akin. Hindi ko naman matatanggap yun. Lalaki rin naman tayo. Sanay kasi sila na nambubully ng ibang coaching staff. Iba kami. So umalis kami dahil sa tawag nung referee [his ejection]. Hopefully, though, tapos na ito. I take full responsibility for the incident.”

“He is a liar. What happened was he threw the ball high up in the air. So, I complained to the referee and when he saw me complaining, he pointed at me. Ngumarat siya sa akin. Hindi ko naman puwedeng palampasin yun. I am sorry. I should have kept my cool. But, that is what happened,” explained Cordero.

The referees finished all of Letran’s timeots but the Knights did not come out. Thus, San Beda won the game, officially, 20-0.

In the first game, the San Beda College Red Lions added to the woes of NCAA rival Emilio Aguinaldo College, demolishing the Generals, 91-67. Despite a sluggish first quarter, the Red Lions finished the opening half with a commanding 20-point lead, 49-29.

San Beda had 23 turnovers compared to EAC’s 35, a key statistic in the one-sided affair. “We were out-muscled within the shaded area, said Generals interim coach Gino Manuel, “This is one of the aspects in our game that we need to improve on this summer.” Manuel could not have been more spot on as his team could only carom 26 boards, with the Red Lions hauling down 57 of their own. The returning Emilian Vargas led EAC with 16 markers.

The loss puts EAC at the bottom of Group A action at 0-2. Coach Frankie Lim’s troops, meanwhile, won their second consecutive game to move up to 2-1. They next face archrival Colegio de San Juan de Letran on May 22 after their US trip.

REV. Fr. Aloysius Ma. A. Maranan was elected rector-president of San Beda College in Mendiola Manila by the school’s board of trustees during a special meeting last April 7.

Fr. Aloysius will have a three-year term, from Academic Year 2010-2011 to Academic Year 2012-2013.

“It is the hope of the board that the college community will give its committed support, assistance, and cooperation to our elected rector-president. The success of every established institution lies in the support and cooperation of every working member thereof pushing toward the fruition of shared aspirations,” said board chairman Manuel V. Pangilinan.

Prior to his election, Fr. Aloysius was vice-rector and principal of San Beda College Rizal (2007 to 2010); high principal of San Beda College Alabang from 1994 to 1998; vice-rector and principal from 1998 to 2001; and rector from 2001 to 2004.

Fr. Aloysius earned his bachelor’s degree in Economics from San Beda. He also holds an MA in Theology from Maryhill School of Theology, Licentiate in Canon Law from the Pontifical University of Sto. Tomas, and a Doctorate in Educational Management from De La Salle University.

Born Sept. 21, 1962, Fr. Aloysius was ordained priest on April 20, 1991. He entered the Abbey of Our Lady of Montserrat in Mendiola, Manila in 1984, and pronounced his monastic vows on May 31, 1986.

Some may perceive them as jerks, nuts, morons, stupid, bastards, crazy, but behind the words of their songs you can sense artistry as creativity comes to play to produce extraordinary music. Club Dredd describes them as frustrated, fun loving, nuts, musicians, bastards, banger, idiot, attention-deficit disorder victims, penicillin user, and tanga.

It is the childish aura and demeanor of the band that is meant to entertain the audience. They seek to charm their listeners with silly lyrics and  twisted musical exploration, as their musical influences range “from mild  to wild” according to the legendary concert bar Club Dredd.

Tanya Markova can easily be recognized through their unique get-up. They usually portray an image of creepy pseudonyms who would make fun of their music, which they recognize as art rather than an irritation factor.

The band’s 2 main men (Gel del Pilar a.k.a. IWA MOTORS and Harlon Agsaoay a.k.a. NORMA LOVE) graduated from San Beda College having a degree on Bachelor of Arts Major in Philosophy. They also featured in their latest single “Picture Picture” the famous balut vendor who will always be close to the hearts of Bedans, Mang Roger.

ROME dela Rosa received the ball on the break and quickly recognized a two-on-one advantage. Once his defender got close enough, he dished it off to his talented rookie teammate, Anthony Semerad, who finished strong to the hole.

That basket put the Red Lions up, 67-61 with 1:11 remaining in the game. And it was enough to put the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons away as San Beda College won its first game in the 2010 FilOil Flying V Tanduay First Five Invitational Cup, 70-61, last Friday, April 16, 2010 at the Arena in San Juan.

Semerad, one of six new rookies on this year’s San Beda lineup, finished with a team-high 17 points. Dela Rosa, a second year forward, added 12.

The game was close in the fourth quarter as the Fighting Maroons ignited a 13-2 run coming out of the huddle. Fil-American Mike Silungan, led the charge and got his team to within one, 61-60 after draining a long triple with 2:45 left. Silungan, a rookie, introduced himself as an explosive scorer who can light it up from distance and take it strong to the rack. He finished with a game-high 25 points. Unfortunately, it was not enough. He fouled out with 14.6 seconds to go.

UP, which tied National University at the cellar in the UAAP last season with a 3-11 record, is looking to build on its youth movement.

“Our primary goal is to really be able to fit together as a team especially because it’s a young team. A lot of our players weren’t here with us today because they were either injured or they had some academic commitments. That’s why we were missing the likes of Mikey Reyes, Alvin Padilla and Woody Co. So, we want to continue to play together as the tournament progresses,” said UP head coach Aboy Castro.

The Red Lions, who lost to the Ateneo Blue Eagles, 84-73 in their opener last Saturday, look to build on the victory in their next game against the Emilio Aguinaldo College Generals on Wednesday, April 21, also at the Arena in San Juan.
